RTFB: Episode 17 - Foreigner

A Felicitous New Year to you! In this episode Rachel and Elena are joined by our cosplay pal  - engineer and Paidhi fan, Eli. This marks the first book we've read on RTFBPodcast in which one of the hosts has the book tattooed on her body.... so yea this book was OK, we guess. Of COURSE, this is one of Rachel's all-time favorites and she's pretty happy to get to talk about CJ Cherryh's Foreigner novels!

CJ Cherryh's genre-bending epic begins with Foreigner, the political adventures of a government employee serving as the lone human allowed amidst the formidable, inscrutable, Atevi. It's space ships, jump-point errors, assassins, tea sets and seat of your pants negotiations as only a dictionary-maker with an extreme sense of duty can serve it. (Always Kabiu). Spoilers: the hero is kind of a huge nerd.

RTFB: Episode 16 - Provenance

Rachel and Elena are back with a podcast favorite in the latest Ann Leckie novel, Provenance. Spoiler-heavy (just read the book!) discussion covering Hwae, Ingray, the mysterious Pahlad Budrakim and everyone's favorite - Captain Uisine! Special mentions of the Geck, spidermechs and Ambassador Tibanvori <3

We loved this novel and were overjoyed to be back in the masterful hands of Ann Leckie. A more intimate story than the sprawling Ancillary Justice books. Provenance is a rewarding follow-up that proves Leckie is just as good with overzealously polite translator programs as she is with vengeful ships.

RTFB: Episode 12 - Sunshine

Rachel and Elena read Sunshine by Robin McKinley. Not your run of the mill vampire story, and we would expect nothing less from a master like McKinley, this one has a baker with an affinity for sunlight, a modern setting full of magic and a vampire in an unexpected friendship.

RTFB: Episode 11 - A Court of Thorns and Roses

We're joined by our librarian friend, Lauren, to read Sarah J. Maas' A Court of Thorns and Roses. This is an extra long episode because we really loved this book! We're continuing our delving into fairy tales. ACOTAR is a new adult type fantasy action adventure romance with high stakes, honestly written effects of emotional trauma, monsters, war and as always with fairies, trickery!

RTFB: Episode 10 - The Snow Queen

We're back after an unscheduled break (one of our hosts had a major fire but everything is good now!) to read Joan D. Vinge's The Snow Queen, a retelling of the classic fairy tale with an epic scifi twist! We bent our recommendation rules to read this one and were not disappointed! This one has everything from bondage gear boyfriends to ancient super computers!

RTFB: Episode 09 - Lost Stars

It's almost Star Wars Celebration Orlando, so we're reading some Star Wars! Not just any Star Wars - Rachel's favorite from the new canon, Lost Stars by Claudia Gray. It's a star-crossed love story set in the Star Wars universe, following two characters that find themselves on opposite sides of a galactic war. Cameos from some of your favs, new places, awesome ship names.. it's the most fun we've had reading a book so far!

NOTE: Rachel mentions an article on the economics of Star Wars that can be found here
